PD Opportunities
Grow your skills.
VALRC offers professional development (PD) opportunities for adult educators and staff in a variety of offerings to best serve your needs.
If you enjoy learning in a more structured environment, our facilitated online courses and webinar series provide you with experts from the field to guide your learning journey. For those of you who enjoy interacting with your peers, our virtual professional learning communities (PLCs) and online open discussions allow you to learn in and among other adult educators from across the state. We even have on-demand, self-paced online tutorials where you can work at your own pace with what works best for your schedule.
Facilitated Online Courses
These online courses offer in-depth explorations of evidence-based practices in a variety of core adult education areas. All are facilitated by qualified leaders in their respective fields. Courses run anywhere from six to ten weeks and have closed enrollment. On-demand options are available upon request.
Virtual Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)
A professional learning community, or PLC, is a group of educators that meets regularly, shares expertise, and works collaboratively to improve teaching skills and the academic performance of learners. Like facilitated online courses, our PLCs offer in-depth explorations of evidence-based practices in adult education. The format differs in that peer-to-peer collaboration through professional dialogue is the focus of study.
Webinar Series
For individuals who want to develop their skills but may not have the time to dedicate to a course or PLC, our webinar series take our core educational content and provide it in an alternative format to accommodate busy schedules. These workshops are facilitated by adult education practitioners and while attending all sessions is recommended, it is not necessary in order to get the most out of each individual session.
On-Demand Self-Paced Learning
VALRC offers a variety of foundational, self-paced tutorials and webinars for adult educators that can be accessed on-demand and taken at one’s leisure. These virtual learning opportunities have been designed by VALRC educational specialists but are non-facilitated. Registration and content access is provided through the Reach 360 platform. If you do not already have a Reach 360 account, you can use this link to set an account up. For help with Reach 360, including account set-up, contact VALRC at [email protected] or 1-800-237-0178.
Please note that VALRC self-paced tutorials were previously housed in Canvas. Those tutorials are available for completion until September 30, 2024. If you are already enrolled in one of these courses, you are able to complete them in Canvas; however, after September 30, these tutorials will no longer be available in Canvas.
Online Open Discussions
To facilitate communication and collaboration between regions, programs, and peers regarding specific areas of collective interest; VALRC hosts a variety of open online discussions. Participation expectations are determined by each group and VALRC welcomes recommendations from the field for potential new groups.
Our PD opportunities are offered free of charge to those who are affiliated with adult education programs funded through the Virginia Department of Education and/or the Virginia Literacy Foundation. If you are not funded through either of these organizations, please contact us directly at [email protected] or by phone at 1-800-237-0178 for more information and a fee schedule.
