VALRC: Serving Refugees, New Americans, & Immigrants PLC

Goals:

  • To provide technical assistance to programs who are already or expect to serve refugees in their adult education programs
  • To connect practitioners to share promising instructional, in-person and virtual, and outreach strategies
  • To provide resources and support related to teaching diverse populations, including asset-based approach strategies and culturally responsive practices

All sessions will take place via Zoom from 3:00 – 4:30 PM.

Thursday, Jan. 26 Cultural competency for working with diverse adult learners
Thursday, Feb. 23 Instruction: Literacy at all levels and balancing learner goals
Thursday, March 23 Culturally responsive practices and an asset-based approach to support diverse learners
Thursday, April 27 Trauma-informed care and social-emotional learning

Who should attend:

  • ESOL coordinators and lead teachers working to recruit learners from and engage with the refugee community
  • ESOL or ABE instructors or tutors who expect to or already have refugee learners, including emerging English language learners, in their classrooms
  • ESOL instructors or tutors who expect to or already are teaching classes specifically for refugees
