Morning and Night
by Joann Smith
As day break approaches,
the sun is rising
above the mountain horizon.
Roosters are crowing,
letting you know
it’s a new day.
I’m in the kitchen
preparing breakfast
for my family;
looking out the window
on a beautiful sunny day
while sipping on coffee.
Now time to put on my shoes,
and go
enjoy a delightful day.
As night falls,
the sun sets
over the Rappahannock River.
As the sun slipped away
over the clouds,
[There’s] a twilight of stars,
high in the sky
like diamonds.
Moonlight shines
on the field of snow,
like the darkness of a polar night.
As my eyes retired
for the night,
I said a prayer
to see
another day.
