SBI 1: Translating Standards Into College and
Career Readiness-Aligned English Language Arts/Literacy Instruction

This course aims to cultivate standards expertise within programs, training instructors and other educators on the content of the standards and their instructional implications. SBI 1 focuses on developing a deep understanding of the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education and key instructional shifts/advances prompted by the CCRS, evaluating curricula and resources for standards alignment, and incorporating the standards and shifts into lesson planning and revision.

SBI: VA training materials are, in large part, taken or adapted from materials developed by StandardsWork under contract from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education as part of the Standards-in-Action initiative. SBI 1 training content was originally offered to Virginia adult educators as part of the November 2015 CCRS Teacher-Leadership Institute; a second cohort was trained in July 2016. The online course provides an onboarding opportunity for educators who are new to an instructional leadership/coaching role or a richer understanding of standards for teachers who have some basic knowledge of the CCRS but want to engage with the standards and their key shifts in a more meaningful way as they work with adult learners.
