SUMMARY:GEDTS Tuesdays for Teachers: Critical Reading and the RLA Extended Response
DESCRIPTION:Previous Tuesdays for Teachers sessions on the GED® RLA Extended Response have focused on many aspects of writing including grammar skills\, the writing process\, and creating effective arguments. Yet the extended response is just as much a reading task as it is a writing one. \nIn this session\, participants will discover strategies for critically reading the source text arguments and using a T-chart to gather evidence. Participants will also learn an effective method for analyzing evidence and where to find other resources to help students practice this task. There will be time at the end to process thoughts and pose questions. \nRegister here for October’s webinar. \nTuesdays for Teachers is GEDTS’ free professional development series designed for educators. This bi-monthly series takes a deeper dive into classroom strategies and techniques for the GED® test. Find previous webinar recordings on ged.com. \n

SUMMARY:GEDTS Tuesdays for Teachers: You Can’t Revise and Edit until You Analyze!
DESCRIPTION:GED Testing Service shares that the spotlight is on writing for August’s Tuesdays for Teachers webinar: \n“We’ve talked about grammar skills that students need to write effective sentences. We’ve explored the writing process step-by-step. We’ve modeled and practiced writing effective arguments and claims. We’ve even looked at the GED Extended Response Scoring Tool. BUT… we\, as teachers\, still have problems helping our students write extended responses…and earn points! It may be time for a different approach to the extended response. \n“We are going to take a dive into the essential elements of an effective response: \n\nArguments and evidence\nConnections\, explanations\, details\, and transitions\nSentence structure\, grammar\, and mechanics\n\nHowever\, we are not stopping there. Next stop\, analyzing writing samples. We’ll share with you an Extended Response Checklist that will provide you with a quick way to review your students’ writing samples and identify the good parts and those that need a little (or a lot) of help. Finally\, we will develop a plan for building students’ skills so they can write a response that will make them proud. \n“As always\, there will be time for Questions and Concerns. The session will be recorded and materials posted on the GED website.” \nThis will be followed by a “hot topic” session on the GED & Me official mobile app\, which has been live on the Apple App store since the end of June. “Now with more than 40\,000 downloads\, we’re learning more about mobile app users and how the App is bringing learners back to pursue their credential.  Listen in as we share data and insights about users and how you might want to use the app in your classrooms.” \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:GEDTS Tuesdays for Teachers: Close Reading & GED Tech Apprenticeship Program Update
DESCRIPTION:Register here. \nContent Session (1 hour): Starting the New Year with Close Reading Session \nIt’s time to be serious about close reading. Survey responses received from you echoed a desire for more strategies to improve Reasoning Through Language Arts results. Over the past few years\, we have focused on mathematics. We’ve worked hard to help students build their math skills — and we are seeing results. Now\, we need to transfer some of that instructional energy to reading. Join GEDTS as we explore strategies to help students build their reading skills. We will explore reading skills students need across the content areas. \nTopic of the Day (1/2 hour): GED Tech Apprenticeship Program Update \nThe GED Tech Apprenticeship Program\, a partnership between WithYouWithMe and GED Testing Service\, continues to build momentum since the successful Job Fair held in Los Angeles in October 2023. SUMMARY:GED Testing Service: Shared Strategies for Student Success with Debi Faucette
DESCRIPTION:GEDTS writes\, “The 2023 Annual GED Conference in NYC was an opportunity for GED Testing Service to provide a robust slate of concurrent and plenary sessions to provide learning and networking opportunities with colleagues. It was also an opportunity for GED Testing Service staff to listen and learn from our colleagues so that we can better serve you\, and in turn\, better serve our adult learners. You were heard. We appreciated the thoughts and comments regarding professional development and in the months since the conference we have taken action to create a framework to respond to what we have learned to date. We will share our initial ideas to move ‘Back to the Basics’ in professional development and reveal how we can collaborate to set the stage with Tuesday for Teachers to build to the 2024 GED Annual Conference. \n “We are also excited to share that GED Testing Service has partnered with WithYouWithMe\, a social impact tech company\, to provide students with access to resources and services that can open doors to new opportunities and careers. Adult educators will have an opportunity to learn more about this partnership and how it can help their students.” \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:GEDTS Tuesday for Teachers: Have You Talked about “Zero” Lately?
DESCRIPTION:GED Testing Services offers the Tuesdays for Teachers series as a free professional development offering. Here’s their description of the upcoming March session: We often “talk about nothing\, or zero” in day-to-day conversations. A conversation about the “zero” in RLA is certainly “nothing” and has become a serious concern for many educators and their students. We hear the concerns and need to address “the elephant in the room:” the zero in the scoring rubric. In this session\, we will answer your questions about “why a zero?” and provide a deeper understanding of the zero. Join us to help students improve their writing skills on the Extended Response and real-world writing. Register today!
