SUMMARY:Overview of Public Benefits Changes for Refugee & Immigrant Populations
DESCRIPTION:VDSS Office of New Americans \nWebinar Overview of Public Benefits Changes for Refugee & Immigrant Populations\nREGISTER HERE \nDetails\nThis webinar will explain in a clear\, simple way how the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA)/H.R.1 changes access to food assistance and health coverage for refugees\, asylees\, and other immigrants. It is designed for anyone who serves immigrant communities\, even if they do not currently offer benefits or legal services. \nObjectives \n\nUnderstand the main H.R.1 changes to SNAP\, Medicaid\, CHIP\, and similar public benefits for newcomers.\nLearn when key changes are scheduled to take effect so staff can track timelines and avoid surprises.\nBe aware of early warning signs that clients are being cut off or denied\, and know how to respond.\nEmphasize why sharing accurate\, language‑accessible information supports newcomers’ right to make informed\, self‑directed choices.\nPrepare your organization (and clients) with simple plans for outreach\, referrals\, and internal coordination before and as changes roll out.\n\nAfter this session\, participants will \n\nFeel more prepared to talk with community members about possible changes to their food and health benefits\, without giving legal advice.\nAssist refugee and immigrant communities through informed guidance and support\, while honoring their self‑determination.\nHave ideas for how to share information inside their own programs.\nKnow where to look for updated information and resources.\n\nDue to strong interest in our first session in early May\, we are offering this webinar again. Bring your questions and refresh your knowledge. \nImportant notes \n\nThis is an educational session only; it is not legal advice.\nPresenters will share general information and public resources but cannot guarantee the accuracy\, completeness\, or ongoing availability of any outside resource shared.\nWe will review and respond to questions submitted at registration after the main presentation\, as time allows.\nParticipants will be encouraged to consult qualified legal or accredited representatives for individual cases.\nThe session will not be recorded.\n\nREGISTER HERE \n*The VALRC is not responsible for the registration or content of this webinar. Please direct questions to the webinar developers.
