Susan Watson Bio Pic In my role as ESOL Specialist, I coordinate ESOL teacher professional development that aligns with state and federal initiatives as well as local interests and needs. I also design and facilitate online courses and face to face workshops on the practice of teaching adult English learners. I participate in a number of projects and committees, one of which is EU-Speak. EU-Speak is an international partnership of researchers and educators who focus their efforts on second language and literacy learning for adult immigrants and refugees with limited or interrupted formal schooling. Beginning in 2019, I am adjunct faculty at VCU School of Education where I teach a course on the foundations of American education.

Since coming to Virginia in 2007, I have taught ESOL for Prince William County Schools Adult Education Program and Northern Virginia Community College Workforce Development Division. I also spent three years as an EFL teacher in Japan. Before that, I taught adults in other settings, including the military and healthcare industries. I came to adult education as an Army veteran and career-switcher because it combines two things I love: teaching and working with adults.

I completed my Ph.D. in education at VCU in 2018. My dissertation, Exploring Literacies in the Assemblage of English for Speakers of Other Languages Classrooms, looks at experiences of language and literacy learning in adulthood. My research interest is second language teaching and learning, especially for adults with limited reading and writing skills in their first language. I also have a M.Ed. in adult literacy from VCU, a TESL graduate certificate from George Mason University, and a Virginia ESOL certification.
