Susan Watson Bio Pic In my role as ESOL Specialist, I coordinate teacher professional development that aligns with state and federal initiatives as well as local interests and needs. This work includes the design and delivery of online courses, face-to-face workshops, and virtual meetings, all with a focus on the practice of teaching English to adult learners. I participate in a number of projects and committees, one of which is the EU-Speak Board. EU-Speak is an international partnership of researchers and educators looking to make a difference in the educational outcomes of immigrant and refugee background adults who are learning to read and write for the first time in a new language. I also present original work at local, national, and international conferences on teacher professional development, and English language teaching and learning for adults. Lastly, in 2019, I took on the additional role of adjunct instructor for VCU School of Education and began teaching courses to students who aspire to become teachers

Before joining the VALRC, I taught ESOL for Prince William County Schools Adult Education Program and Northern Virginia Community College Workforce Development Division. Prior to that, I spent three years as an EFL teacher in Japan. In addition to adult education, I have taught adults in other settings, including the military and healthcare industries. Like many of us, I came to adult education as a career-switcher; I am a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and a military spouse.

I completed my Ph.D. in education at VCU in 2018. My dissertation, Exploring Literacies in the Assemblage of English for Speakers of Other Languages Classrooms, looks at experiences of language and literacy learning in adulthood. My research interest is second language teaching and learning for adults. I have a M.Ed. in adult literacy from VCU, a TESL graduate certificate from George Mason University, and a Virginia ESOL certification.

In my free time, I enjoy gardening, cooking, and wine tourism. My husband and I have traveled to California, New York, Germany, Italy, Greece, and Croatia to taste and learn about wine. Of course, we also enjoy wine tourism closer to home. To date, we have visited over 100 of Virginia’s wineries and find them as beautiful as any we’ve seen around the world.
