Description:

Instructing the Adult ELL: The Field of ESOL

The content will include background knowledge of our field including:
• an historical perspective
• current issues and content areas within the field
• an overview on second language acquisition theory, methods, and techniques
• content standards
• goal-setting and assessment

The focus of the workshop will be on each participant’s own classroom. Discussions will center around how the strategies learned can be applied to a variety of situations. Experienced practitioners will have opportunities to share.

NOTE: As a follow-up to this workshop, participants will be expected to complete a professional development extension project within four months that includes:

• A self-evaluation
• An action plan
• A Certificate Action Plan Result (CAPR)

Instructing the Adult: Resources

This workshop is the equivalent to attending Level 1, Session 2, at the summer ABE/GED Instructor VAILL 2009. This workshop focuses on instructional tools such as textbooks, packaged curriculums, Internet, and other technology resources.

Instructing the Adult Education Student: Resources
• Curricula: resources, materials, building your own, other options
• Distance learning
• Other technology-supported learning

After attending Session 2, participants will complete their self-evaluation of their instructional practice using the Virginia Adult Education Teacher Standards 4, 5, and 6. As with the first half of their self-evaluation, participants will complete the CAPR to tell what they have discovered about their teaching style and what they plan to do to strengthen or improve the areas they wish to address.

VAECP: ABE/GED Instructor Level I, Session 1 – Instructing the Adult Learner: The Field of Adult Education

This training will help ABE/GED instructors place their classrooms and learners in the wider context of adult education in Virginia and in the U.S. Participants will consider the unique characteristics of adult learners, with a focus on strategies for encouraging persistence. Participants will also investigate formative and summative assessment and goal setting, in light of both their individual learners’ needs and state policy requirements.

This six-hour workshop is the first step in completing Level One of Virginia’s ABE/GED Instructor certification Program. The trainings that make up the Virginia Adult Educator Certification Program are designed to be immediately practical for classroom instructors and to provide the standard platform of knowledge and skills that is needed as our field continues to become more professional, more accountable, and more focused on helping adults achieve

This day-long workshop will go over all the elements of grant-writing from identifying a problem that needs to be solved, to proposing a realistic and measurable solution, to tying in all the grant elements that will result in a cohesive, seamless, and competitive proposal. Emphasis will be placed on writing applications for the FY2010-2011 Office of Adult Education and Literacy grant cycle.
