Reading
“Reading is the most basic of skills. Reading provides access to other skills and knowledge, facilitates life-long learning, and opens doors to opportunity.”
In 2006/7, the Resource Center will be updating our Virginia Reading Project training to incorporate information from the recently published Applying Research in Reading Instruction for Adults. This book reviews research-based principles of reading instruction and then suggests practical ways to apply the findings to an adult learning setting. News for You, by New Reader's Press
This is a weekly paper that summarizes current events for the low to intermediate level adult reader. It is colorful and well-organized and comes with student activities and a Teacher's Guide. The price is very reasonable. It's great for keeping adults' attention, expanding their world, improving vocabulary, comprehension and critical thinking. It is also a springboard for writing activities.
