"If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow." ― John Dewey

The SBI:VA trainings aim to cultivate standards expertise within programs, training instructors and other educators on the content of the standards, instructional implications, and strategies for working as part of a professional learning community. The SBI 1: Translating Standards Into College and Career Readiness-Aligned Instruction training has two strands: CCRS English language arts/literacy and CCRS Mathematics.

SBI 1 focuses on developing a deep understanding of the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education and key instructional shifts/advances prompted by the CCRS, evaluating curricula and resources for standards alignment, and incorporating the standards and shifts into lesson planning and revision.

SBI: VA training materials are, in large part, taken or adapted from materials developed by StandardsWork under contract from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education as part of the Standards-in-Action initiative. SBI 1 training content was originally offered to Virginia adult educators as part of the November 2015 CCRS Teacher-Leadership Institute; a second cohort was trained in July 2016.

Exploring Teacher Leadership Trends and Possibilities by Dr. Terry Dozier
Dr. Dozier, Director of the Center for Teacher Leadership at VCU’s School of Education, gave this presentation at the 2015 CCRS Teacher-Leadership Institute. It includes a description of three areas of teacher leadership influence: instructional, professional, and policy. The SBI:VA trainings aim to develop teacher leadership mindsets and skills in all participants; SBI 1 focuses on the instructional impact of educators well-versed in the standards, while SBI 2 focuses on the professional impact these leaders can have working with their colleagues.
